At CustomKings, we’ve always believed that the perfect gift starts with quality, care, and confidence. Over the years, we’ve listened closely to our customers, refined our processes, and made tough but necessary decisions to ensure every item that leaves our workshop in Bennett’s Green, NSW, reflects the high standards you expect from Australia’s trusted personalised gift brand.
One of those decisions? We no longer accept customer-supplied items for embroidery.
And while that might raise a few eyebrows, we’re here to explain why — and how our Click & Collect service actually makes personalisation easier, more reliable, and better value than ever.
Why We No Longer Accept Customer-Supplied Items for Embroidery
We understand the appeal: you’ve got a favourite hoodie, a special baby onesie, or a corporate uniform you’d love to customise. But after years of experience in the personalisation space, we’ve learned that embroidery success depends on more than just thread and design — it hinges on the fabric, construction, and stability of the base product.
1. Unpredictable Fabric Quality = Risk to Your Item
Not all garments are created equal. Even within the same brand, fabric blends, stretch, thickness, and stitching can vary between batches. What looks like a sturdy cotton hoodie might be too thin for dense embroidery. A “soft and cozy” beanie could shift in the hoop during stitching, leading to misalignment or puckering.
When we use our own curated products, like our premium unisex hoodies, kids’ tees, or chef-style aprons we test them rigorously with our industrial embroidery machines. We know exactly how each fabric reacts under tension, how it holds thread, and how it washes over time.
But with customer-supplied items? We can’t guarantee that. And the last thing we want is to damage a cherished item, especially when it’s irreplaceable.
2. Hooping Challenges and Machine Limitations
Embroidery requires the fabric to be held taut in a hoop during stitching. For this to work, the garment needs enough flat, stable surface area near the desired placement (e.g., chest, back, sleeve). Many ready-made items, especially those with zippers, thick seams, or curved panels simply don’t accommodate this without risk.
Even if an item looks suitable, hidden flaws like weak seams or pre-stretched fabric can cause the embroidery to distort or the material to tear mid-run. Our machines are precision tools, but they can’t adapt to every unknown variable.
3. Quality Control & Consistency
At CustomKings, “meticulously crafted” isn’t just a slogan — it’s our promise. When we source the product ourselves, we ensure:
- Perfect colour match between thread and fabric
- Consistent stitching density and alignment
- No damage during production
- A finished product that lasts wash after wash
With customer-supplied items, we lose control over that consistency. And because custom embroidery is permanent, there’s no room for error.
💡 Good to know: In rare, exceptional cases, we may assess a customer-supplied item in-store only but this is at our discretion, carries no guarantee of success, and incurs additional assessment time. For the vast majority of orders, we strongly recommend choosing from our proven product range.
The Better Alternative: Premium Products, Ready to Personalise
Instead of bringing your own, why not choose from our carefully selected range of embroidery-ready apparel and accessories? Every item in our catalogue has been chosen for:
- Fabric stability (ideal for crisp, clean embroidery)
- Durability (holds up to repeated washing)
- Style & versatility (from classic hoodies to trendy beanies and professional aprons) N/A
Whether you’re gifting a Personalised Pet Hoodie for a dog lover, an Embroidered Apron for a home chef, or a Custom Beanie for winter birthdays, you’re getting a product designed from the ground up for personalisation.
And the best part? No hidden risks. No guesswork. Just beautiful, reliable results.
