How to Keep Your Leather Wallet Looking Its Best

Your personalised wallet is built to last a lifetime. A little bit of love goes a long way. Here’s everything you need to know.

Short on time? This quick video covers the essentials.

Your Wallet Gets Better with Age

We put a lot of thought into every CustomKings wallet. They’re made from 100% natural cowhide and designed to handle everyday life, bumps, scratches, and all. The leather is tough enough to cop a beating, but with a bit of care it’ll stay soft, supple, and looking great for years to come.

Honestly, these wallets age really well on their own. But if you want to keep yours in top shape, the tips below will help.

Scratches Aren’t a Bad Thing

Natural leather develops what’s called a “patina” over time. Every scratch, scuff, and mark changes the colour slightly and adds character. It’s not damage, it’s your wallet becoming one of a kind. That worn-in look is what makes real leather so good.

The Quick Version

The main things to do (and not do) to keep your wallet happy.

Do This

  • Rub in some leather balm or wax every now and then to keep it soft
  • Wipe up spills straight away with a slightly damp cloth
  • Let it air dry naturally if it gets wet

Avoid This

  • Detergents or harsh cleaners (they’ll discolour the leather and wreck the engraving)
  • Stuffing it full of cards and coins for ages (stretches the leather out)
  • Using a hairdryer or any heat source to dry it (cracks and hardens the leather)

If Your Wallet Gets Wet

No stress. Just grab a soft cloth and pat it dry. The main thing is not to leave it sitting around wet, that’s how mould starts.

  • Wipe off any moisture with a soft leather cloth
  • Don’t put it away while it’s still damp
  • Let it dry naturally at room temperature
  • Never use a hairdryer or heater, heat makes the leather crack and go stiff
Cleaning Up Spills

The sooner you get to it, the better. Most spills wipe off easily if you catch them quick.

  • Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe it clean
  • Stay away from detergents or household cleaners, they’ll discolour the leather
  • For stubborn marks, a soft toothbrush with gentle pressure usually does the job
Dealing with Scratches

Most light scratches actually blend in over time and add to the look. But if one’s bothering you, here’s what to do.

  • Rub the scratch gently in a circular motion with a soft dry cloth to spread the natural wax coating
  • For deeper scratches, apply a small amount of leather wax and buff it in
  • A regular coat of leather cream helps prevent future scratches from standing out
Preventing Stretched Leather

Leather is flexible, but it does have limits. If you cram too much in there for too long, it’ll lose its shape.

  • Try not to overload your wallet with cards you don’t use daily
  • Avoid storing heaps of coins in there for extended periods
  • Give the card slots a break and rotate what you carry
Keeping the Leather Soft and Supple

This is the big one for long-term care. A bit of balm every few months makes a world of difference.

  • Test a small, hidden area first as some products can slightly change the colour
  • Apply a thin, even layer of leather balm or wax with a clean soft sponge
  • Wipe off any excess with a dry cloth
Heads up: don’t go overboard. Too much product too often can make the leather overly soft and actually cause damage. A light coat every couple of months is plenty.
